CAT BOY (2023)

Winter 2023
The Backstory
A Christmas installation graced the facade of Kaleva Church in Tampere from December 22st to 24th, illuminating the heart of the city. The display narrated a tale of a boy who, on a winter day, loss his cat. He embarks on a city-wide quest, visiting Tampere´s famous monuments in search of his furry companion.
Ultimately, the two are joyfully united, with the cat gifting the boy a Christmas bauble to decorate his tree, culminating in a heartwarming holiday moment.
Shout out to the city
Iconic city landmarks and monuments of Tampere included in CAT BOY: Vanha Kirkko (Carlo Bassi) , Koskipuisto, the Merchant statue (Wäinö Aaltonen), and the church itself.
Why these details are included in CAT BOY, you may ask? I believe, it´s a small tribute to the city - something that locals can recognize and think , "Oh, I know that place" . This kind of interaction between the work and its viewers add a layer of fun and makes the experience more memorable.
Production Note
Color was an important aspect in CAT BOY:High focus on vibrant color palette in contrast to brutalist architectural style of Kaleva church in winter.
I began by creating graphic illustrations of landmarks, using simple shapes as the foundation to ensure that people could clearly see the details from a distance on the installation. These illustrations were then animated using After Effects. We also incorporated frame-by-frame animation, and with the help of my teammate, Nhi Ta, we were able to complete CAT BOY in just a month.
